Students who enjoy listening to West Essex High School’s Pat McGlynn lecture now have more chances to hear him as the teacher won his own radio show for a year on the 24-hour sports radio station, WFAN (101.9FM/660AM). after competing in the station’s Fantasy Phenom contest.
WFAN is a CBS New York radio station that covers local sports in Tri-State area. McGlynn, 35, a lifelong New York Mets, New York Rangers and New York Knicks fan, would fall asleep as a kid listening to the station.
McGlynn, originally of West Caldwell, teaches media production and social studies at West Essex and does not plan to give up his day job after scoring the WFAN opportunity.
McGlynn has been listening to WFAN ever since he was a boy and having his own show on the station is a dream come true, he said. He grew up listening to the hosts discuss his favorite teams, the Mets, Rangers and Knicks.
Much of his success in the contest he attributes to just listening to the station for so long and picking up on the style and cues of the hosts.
“If you listen as long as I have, certain things get ingrained,” he said.
When reflecting on what helped him stand out in the contest, McGlynn said without hesitation, his voice.
“I was always told you should be on the radio. I hear it every day,” he said. “My voice sets me apart.”
He also said luck played a big part in his victory. He went last in the final round of the contest, which he felt gave him an advantage.
Winning the show was especially an accomplishment because it was the third year McGlynn participated in the contest.
“I still can’t believe I won,” he said. “I was just so happy, it wasn’t even a reality until 1 a.m. on Saturday morning and the guy pointed at me and was like, ‘you’re on.’”
McGlynn’s show began on Saturday, April 25 and airs from 1 to 3 a.m. The deal is for a full year and includes a scholarship to Connecticut School of Broadcasting.
McGlynn has no prior experience in broadcasting other than announcing West Essex sports games.
