Taking a break from his lambastation of the New York Giants NFL Draft selections last night, Mike Francesa announced he will join Barstool president, Dave Portnoy for a pizza review this summer.
The idea began last week when a caller asked Francesa if he would consider doing a Barstool pizza review. Seemingly unaware of what the caller was talking about and probably concerned it was an attempt at a prank call, Mike snarkily asked, “how do you know I eat pizza?”
On Monday, Francesa took a call from Barstool’s El Pres himself, Dave Portnoy, who said he would be “relentless” in recruiting the Sports Pope to score a slice. At first, Francesa said “I’ll pass,” but by the end of the two-minute conversation his stance softened, telling Portnoy to “send me an invitation, maybe I’ll reconsider.”
Still non-committal, Francesa went on to offer in-depth analysis on pizza consumption, saying, “everybody eats pizza, I don’t know anybody who doesn’t…I’d say more people eat pizza than eat hamburgers, many more. I bet you could find a lot of people who don’t eat hamburgers, but they eat pizza, I think pizza is the most popular food in the country.”
But Thursday night, after appearing on his “Mike’s On” app to crush the Giants first round draft selection of Duke quarterback Daniel Jones, Francesa announced he finally accepted Portnoy’s pizza eating invitation.
Although it’s often at the New York radio icon’s expense, Francesa has become a social media star thanks to the popular Twitter handle, @BackAftahThis. As of Friday morning, the @BackAftahThis Twitter video of Francesa’s reaction to the Giants selecting Daniel Jones already had over 70,000 views, with other videos from this week having been watched as many as 400,000 times.
Portnoy told Mike he bets their “one bite” pizza review will break one million views and judging by the amount of attention other Francesa-related videos garner, I’ll take the over.
