A professional golfer from South Korea won the 74th U.S. Women’s Open and Hank Haney believes it vindicates the comments he made on his SiriusXM radio show last week that led to a suspension.
After receiving backlash for minimizing the LPGA, offending Koreans and all women competing in the U.S. Open, Haney issued an apology on Twitter last week. But when a South Korean won the U.S. Open on Sunday, Haney replied to his Twitter apology, defending the remarks that led to his SiriusXM suspension.
“Congratulations to Jeougean Lee6 on your great win at the US Women’s Open. Who’s The Great Predictor now Steve Johnson @steveyrayj I knew a Lee would win,” Haney added in a second tweet.
The actual spelling of the U.S. Open winner’s name is Jeongeun Lee. She does go by Lee6 because there are six women with the name Lee on the Korean LPGA Tour. Her fan club in Korea is called “Lucky 6.”
The Sunday night tweets from Haney were in reference to a conversation, he and his co-host, Steve Johnson had on their SiriusXM radio show last Wednesday, in which Haney said he “couldn’t name you six players on the LPGA Tour,” and then added “ah, maybe I could – well, I’d go with Lee. If I didn’t have to name a first name, I’d get a bunch of them right.”
After recognizing people were upset with his LPGA comments, Haney told his audience he couldn’t remember what he said, but will “apologize right now if I offended people.”
Friday morning, SiriusXM issued a statement, announcing Haney’s suspension from his weekday show on their PGA Tour Radio channel. The company stated Haney’s comments “were insensitive and do not represent the views of the PGA Tour or SiriusXM,” adding that they’re “reviewing his status on SiriusXM going forward.”
While his future on SiriusXM is currently in doubt, Haney’s attempt at vindicating the insensitive comments also brings out the question of how sincere the apology from last week was. Haney’s show, which usually airs from 10am – noon ET on SiriusXM’s PGA Tour Radio, is not listed on the channel’s schedule this week.
