Steve “Big Dog” Duemig passed away in May after a battle with cancer. He was a staple on Tampa Bay area sports radio for more than two decades. His old station, WDAE is teaming with the Tampa Bay Lightning to honor Duemig’s legacy this Saturday.
During the Lightning’s game against the Winnipeg Jets, the iHeartMedia Tampa Bay suite at AMALIE Arena will be renamed the Duemig Den. A bronze plaque honoring the late host will be hung outside the suite, which is located in section 108.
“’The Big Dog’ was an icon across the Tampa Bay sports media landscape,” Lightning chief executive office Steve Griggs said in a press release. “Steve was never afraid to tell it like it was while still serving as a proponent for all local teams, including the Lightning. That transparency earned him the trust and adoration of fans throughout the Bay Area and the country. We are proud to honor Steve and his legacy with a permanent space inside AMALIE Arena where he will always be among the fans that he enjoyed broadcasting to so dearly.”
Tampa Bay market president for iHeartMedia, Chris Soechting added “‘The Big Dog’ was a true champion for Tampa Bay Sports and is deeply missed by his iHeartMedia family. We are honored to join the Tampa Bay Lightning to create a permanent tribute at AMALIE Arena.”
