Recently launched sports network PlayersTV has the support of Cincinnati Reds pitcher Trevor Bauer and Hall-of-Famer Ken Griffey Jr. According to Variety, both are investing in the network dedicated to sports lifestyle and culture.
PlayersTV debuted in March on Samsung TV Plus, offering a place for athletes to release their own content. Production companies are a common interest for professional athletes, and not just global superstars such as LeBron James or Kevin Durant. More than 120 current and former athletes reportedly have their own production company. PlayersTV seeks to provide a platform for all of them to release, share and monetize their content.
New investors Griffey and Bauer both have their own media companies – Griffey with Swingman Media Group and Bauer who co-founded Momentum. Earlier this month Momentum held a livestream with five major league players to discuss racial injustice. In March, Bauer also used his media company to organize and distribute a sandlot baseball game after COVID-19 caused the sport to shut down.
Griffey and Bauer join an extensive list of athletes who invested in the recently launched network including Carmelo Anthony and Chris Paul. The new investors will lead the baseball side of PlayersTV. By October, the network expects to be available on three undisclosed distributors, placing PlayersTV in more than 75 million households.
