How Far Can A Flagship Station Push For Answers?

“In a market like Dallas, where the Boys are always the topic of conversation, and the fan base is both knowledgeable and passionate, evading the uncomfortable topics is simply unacceptable.”

Radio hosts on flagship stations have the privilege of exclusive access to the individuals who represent the most high profile local and national sports brands. Yet, it can be an unenviable position and a daunting task to secure compelling details from these figures while not simultaneously offending them – especially, when the brand is the most valuable franchise in the world, the Dallas Cowboys, and the interviewee is one of the most powerful people in all of sports, Jerry Jones.

I was again reminded of how delicate this relationship can be, while listening to Shan and RJ’s weekly radio interview with Jerry, courtesy of 105.3 The Fan, home of the Cowboys’ radio broadcasts, on Tuesday morning. At the end of the regularly scheduled segment Jerry was asked about the potential for the Cowboys to use a high draft pick on a quarterback, given the current projections of a surprisingly disappointing season.

Mr. Jones emphatically and without hesitation stated, “Yes, you ask me if it’s crazy to bring the idea up? And I’ve answered it, yes.” Jones continued, “It’s not the thing to be talking about at all. Dak is our quarterback!” This response was followed by that classic sly chuckle we’ve come to know from Jerry when he’s pandering to the moment.

My curiosity triggered immediately, as I anticipated how the morning show duo would proceed in addressing Mr. Jones’ remarks. Having listened to the tandem for years, I, like them, have some reservations regarding the sincere nature of Jerry’s answer. Was this another moment where the interview might get a bit contentious due to follow-up questioning as it had on previous occasions, or would they wrap the segment and challenge the notion amongst themselves and the audience?

There appears to be no universal “correct” approach in managing the relationship with our sports partners. There are simply too many inconsistencies in markets, leagues/conferences, and franchise/program leadership to establish an ideal model. Certainly, a template of best practices exists, but do these not vary given the diverse personalities and motives of the decision makers and influencers in-place?

In a market like Dallas, where the Boys are always the topic of conversation, and the fan base is both knowledgeable and passionate, evading the uncomfortable topics is simply unacceptable. The listenership demands hosts ask guests the tough questions they don’t get the opportunity to. It’s a conundrum for both, the talent and station, for sure!

Too many softballs to the guests and fans checkout or begin to question the credibility. Press the guest too hard or too frequently, and perhaps suffer the consequences of never booking that A-lister again or worse, being reprimanded. That’s A LOT of pressure for Shan, RJ, and anyone else that’s been in a comparable situation. Definitely one of the most challenging aspects of the job!

Given the circumstances surrounding where Dallas is this season, along with the delicate history of the morning show and Jerry, I wasn’t disappointed at all with their decision to “let Jerry off the hook,” as some might be. Those guys made the right call in my eyes. There’s too much season remaining to be holding Jerry’s feet to the fire on this one. Timing is everything, and so are relationships. I highly doubt Jerry Jones would agree to keep joining the fellas weekly if he was uncomfortable in any way, or lacked respect for the partnership.

That said, I will continue to listen in expectation as to when and how often they pushback on Jones, should the time arise to revisit this drafting another QB early conversation. There’s an obligation here to provide the good people of the Metroplex and Dallas Cowboys fans worldwide with the answers they deserve. Besides, the Jerry Jones I know will tolerate a healthy dose of pushback and challenge. Deep down he remembers those are some of the same attributes he built his empire on.
