One of the reasons Joe Buck is an all-time great play-by-play announcer in baseball and football is his ability to stay calm during the big moment.
Buck never oversteps the game winning or altering play, instead keeping his voice secondary and allowing the moment to speak for itself. Maybe his secret is self-awareness and natural poise, or maybe it’s a splash of tequila.
Joining Colin Cowherd’s newly launched podcast network The Volume, Buck said there have been many times that he had a drink in the broadcast booth to stay relaxed.
“I’ll say this. We have had that glass of bourbon in the booth,” Buck told Cowherd. “Although it’s not bourbon, it’s tequila, splash of Grand Marnier and grapefruit juice. I went through a couple years where in the first inning of every postseason baseball game I had the runner go get the biggest beer the stadium sold. And I had it sitting there and I would sip it from time-to-time to remind myself to relax and have fun. I’m just doing a game. And I brought that over to football, but because Troy is a man of finer tastes, beer somehow became tequila, Grand Marnier and grapefruit juice.”
Buck added that they haven’t done it in a while, but the drinks were a good reminder to have fun and keep relaxed. Clearly there’s a balance between drinking tequila to relax vs Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen taking celebratory New Year’s shots on CNN.
Buck and Aikman seemed to be able to find that balance without the audience noticing.
