Rob Barrett has built up strong credibility through his success in the digital media world. He is now ready for another challenge.
Maven Media, the entity that operates the publishing businesses of Sports Illustrated has hired Barrett as its new president of media.
Per Yahoo! – In 2019, Authentic Brands Group purchased Sports Illustrated from Meredith for $110 million (after Meredith bought Time Inc.). ABG then licensed media and publishing rights for the SI brand to Maven. Also in 2019, Maven bought TheStreet for $16.5 million in cash.
“Rob is a visionary leader in the media space. His work at Hearst, Yahoo, Tribune and ABC News is well documented,” Maven CEO Ross Levinsohn said.
Barrett spent the previous five years at Hearst, as president of digital media. He has also spent time at Yahoo’s news and finance group, The LA Times, and ABC News.
“I couldn’t be more excited to have him join our incredible editorial teams at Sports Illustrated and TheStreet to take us to the next level,” he said in a statement.
“My charter is to grow these brands’ subscriptions and advertising businesses,” Barrett told Yahoo! Sports. “A large part of my job is to continue driving growth at SI.” he concluded.
Sports Illustrated has experienced high volumes of layoffs in recent years. That is an area Barrett will be asked to stabilize. He does have some good news to build on though at SI. Digital subscription revenue has increased by 30 percent.
