TrueHoop founder Henry Abbott appeared on Straight Fire with Jason McIntyre last week and expounded on the article he wrote last year surrounding Bill Simmons. The two worked together for years at ESPN after the network bought TrueHoop and Abbott went in-depth on their working relationship in the article.
“Bill’s fine. I don’t know, maybe he’s really mad at me because I wrote that piece,” Abbott said on the podcast. “He’s not the devil. A thing that frustrates me is a lot of talk without a lot of evidence.”
Abbott went more in-depth about the goal he set when he started writing the article last June.
“Bill Simmons was trending nationally, and the two positions were either he’s a terrible racist, or he’s the most wonderful human in the history of the planet. Like, have any of you f*cking met that guy? Like he is neither of those things. Like this is all incorrect. Trust me; it’s far from my collection of these are the worst things I could say about Bill. It was just kind of a summary of what my experience was like working for him for over a decade.”
The TrueHoop founder stuck to his brand with a basketball comparison ready for Simmons.
“I think he’s a super talented… This is a common NBA theme. Supertalented guy, difficult teammate, hard to get along with. Not really interested in team success right and pretty skilled at getting what he wants. It wasn’t the case that he was some sort of all or nothing hero or villain, he’s just kind of selfish.”
Simmons has not reached out to Henry Abbott about the piece, but the basketball blogging pioneer has no regrets about writing it and would welcome another opportunity with a big brand under the right circumstance.
“The dream for me and I think everyone I know in this business is to have a boss you really respect,” Abbott said about working for another large company. “You want a boss who makes your work better. If you can get that, greatest thing in the world. If you can’t, be your own boss.”
Bucks Fans Can Dunk Amin Elhassan For Wrong Prediction
Meadowlark’s Amin Elhassan will make an appearance at a dunk tank in Milwaukee as part of a loud-wrong tour for takes on the 2021 NBA Finals.
Dan Le Batard often pokes fun at himself or others at Meadowlark for when they are “loud wrong.” The phrase is similar to the content found on the Cold Takes Exposed Twitter account where old prognostications are revisited after the result is known, proving the prior prediction to be very, well, loudly wrong.
Such is the case for Meadowlark’s Amin Elhassan who severely downplayed the Milwaukee Bucks’ chances in the NBA Finals. After the Bucks won in six games, Elhassan is paying his retribution to the city of Milwaukee with a stint inside of a dunk tank.
The appearance has been championed on Twitter and Instagram on the Le Batard accounts, full of embarrassing moments from Elhassan in the past caught on television and streaming cameras. An extra joke is built in for regular Le Batard listeners, as the host site of the dunk tank is none other than McGillycuddy’s. The overtly Irish walking-stereotype is a long-running joke by regular guest Greg Cote in which he refers to his physician as Dr. McGillycuddy.
The show has received a lot of play from Amin Elhassan, a noted NBA expert who previously worked for ESPN and also in the Phoenix Suns front office. Earlier this week, Le Batard and Stugotz played the clip for Bucks forward Bobby Portis, whose reaction was one of shock and disgust.
Bucks fans will get the chance to dunk Amin into the tank, or dunk on him with their words, from 11-6 on Wednesday.
ESPN+ To Stream TSN’s NHL Free Agency Coverage
As part of its increased hockey coverage, ESPN-Plus will stream a seven-hour NHL free agency special on Wednesday.
ESPN has dove head first into its resurgent coverage of the NHL. It began with a full special covering the Seattle Kraken expansion draft earlier this month, and will continue with some borrowing from the country’s neighbor to the north. ESPN announced it will stream TSN’s annual coverage of the start of NHL free agency on ESPN+.
The coverage will commence at 11 a.m. EST on July 28 and run seven hours, hosted by James Duthie. Signings will be covered by a flurry of analysts including Gord Miller, Bob McKenzie, Darren Dreger, and Pierre LeBrun. TSN Director of Scouting Craig Button will also be on hand, as will almost two dozen other NHL and TSN personalities.
Teams are still clearing salary cap room ahead of the onslaught of deals, and the NHL looks to capitalize similarly to how the NBA and NFL have used ESPN to make their offseasons as full of coverage as the seasons of play.
ESPN+ will be a major factor in ESPN’s NHL coverage. The platform will be home to games each week. It will also carry exclusive programming, including the highlight show In the Crease, hosted by Linda Cohen.
Barstool Sports Becomes Sponsor, Exclusive Rights Holder For Arizona Bowl

The Arizona Bowl announced a unique partnership with Barstool Sports on Tuesday. The company will become the title sponsor for the Tucson, Arizona bowl game. It will also become the new exclusive rights holder. The game had been partnered with CBS, with the game moving from CBS Sports Network to CBS just last year.
Now, fans that want to watch the Arizona Bowl will need an internet connection. Barstool Sports will have the exclusive media rights. The game will stream on Barstool’s website as well as on the company’s social media channels.
Portnoy, the Barstool founder, announced the agreement on social media today in one of his Emergency Press Conferences. He promised that Barstool would have a hand in everything from distribution to the halftime show, calling the opportunity “our unicorn”.
The Arizona Bowl is in the perfect position to experiment with how it is delivered to fans and what experiences it can provide those in attendance. It is not one of the multiple bowls owned by ESPN. It has never had a longterm media rights deal. On top of that, the matchup between teams from the Mountain West and the MAC could use a little extra juice in order to attract more casual fans.
