The Olympics are just about upon us, and one of its biggest draws in the United States is always the men’s basketball team. It is one sport in particular Americans not only know the athletes but also figure we are going to win. That is why Saturday night’s 90-87 loss to Nigeria came as quite the shock to basketball fans everywhere, given the fact that the last two times these teams played, the US won by a combined 127 points.
Nigeria has come a long ways with its basketball program. That did not stop many observers on Twitter from expressing their shock in the loss despite the likes of Kevin Durant, Bradley Beal, Damian Lillard, and Co. suiting up.
It should be pointed out that the Nigerian roster has plenty of NBA bona fides. The team features eight players from the league and is coaches by former Lakers and Cavs coach Mike Brown. Is that enough to explain the upset of the United States? Of course not, but it also isn’t as if this was a group of men that were stepping off the African continent for the first time.
