The Los Angeles Angels have made a mid-season change to their television broadcast booth. According to The Athletic, The club informed Daron Sutton he will no longer be involved in Angels’ broadcasts.
Sutton said the team told him Saturday that he wouldn’t be on Bally Sports West telecasts moving forward. The decision was a surprise to the son of Hall-of-Fame pitcher Don Sutton.
“This was definitely more of a trial or test than I understood when we started,” Sutton said in a statement to reporters on Sunday. “I enjoyed every second of this opportunity and will cherish the memories always. I am proud of every moment of television the Bally Sports team produced that I was a part of, without incident, and to the joy and satisfaction of so many.”
The broadcaster was in the midst of his first season as a co-play-by-play broadcaster alongside Matt Vasgersian. A dream job of sorts after he grew up an Angels fan. The franchise tabbed Sutton with the role because of Vasgersian’s split schedule calling games for the Angels, MLB Network, and ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball.
Daron Sutton and Vasgersian took over for Victor Rojas after the minor-league Frisco Rough Riders named Rojas their president and general manager this winter.
The 2021 season wasn’t Sutton’s first stint with LA. He worked as a radio play-by-play broadcaster for the club in 2000 and 2001 before becoming the television play-by-play voice for the Milwaukee Brewers from 2002-06 and Arizona Diamondbacks from 2007-12.
After 2012, Sutton has most recently worked for Fox Sports broadcasting games alongside a radio hosting role with MLB Network radio. The team has not announced a replacement for Sutton. Teams around the league are getting a nice All-Star Break to relax, all while the Angels search for the next voice to pair alongside Vasgersian.
