There is no greater epicenter for local sports radio than The Big Apple. Some of sports radio’s legendary programs, figures, and influences flow from New York City. Despite its prominence in the market, Andrew Marchand of The New York Post is reporting ESPN may soon give control over its New York — and Los Angeles — stations over to Good Karma Brands as it refocuses itself on its podcast network.
“The indifference that ESPN has shown to New York’s schedule continues to be a factor, and soon, ESPN in Bristol may bow out of the business aspects of local radio,” said Marchand.
Currently, ESPN 98.7 New York carries DiPietro, Canty, and Rothenberg in morning drive. When that show ends at 8 am, the station does not have another local program on until 2 pm, when Michael Kay’s show begins.
He cites the dominance that WFAN continues to hold over the market given the success of shows such as Boomer & Gio and Carton & Roberts. ESPN’s personnel decisions and economic evaluations have been very public for the last few years, and the move would save the company money on both headcount as well as FM signal leasing.
Craig Karmazin and Good Karma Brands already owns and/or operates a series of ESPN Radio affiliates across the Midwest and in South Florida. That includes ESPN 1000 in Chicago. Bristol turned operation of that station over to the company in September of 2019.
Colin Dunlap Wants Predictions For Colleague’s First Pitch

KDKA morning man Larry Richert is throwing out the first pitch at PNC Park on Thursday. The struggling Pirates will host the Cincinnati Reds for a matinee at 12:35 pm Eastern.
No matter how bad the home team is, it is an honor when representatives ask you to throw out the first pitch. Colin Dunlap recognizes that. The morning show host at 93.7 The Fan celebrated his Audacy co-worker’s honor on Twitter.
Dunlap’s request for predictions on how the pitch would go was met with plenty of jokes. Many were at the Pirates’ expense. Some were based on Pittsburgh sports clichés. There were plenty of well wishes and congratulations fort Richert too.
Larry Richert has been in morning drive on KDKA since 2001 and has been on the air in Pittsburgh, either in TV or on radio, since the 1980s. Despite the news background, his voice is well-known to sports fans. He is the public address announcer at Heinz Field. He also hosts the pregame show for the University of Pittsburgh Panthers and began narrating NFL Films in 1985.

If the pitch on Thursday is anything like the one in the video, Colin Dunlap has nothing to worry about. It doesn’t look like Richert is destined for the same low light reel that includes Baba Booey, 50 Cent, and Carly Rae Jepson.
1300 The Buzz Drops Sports Talk

Tulsa has been a very busy market in terms of sports radio news recently. It was good news two weeks ago when Griffin Communications announced the debut of The Blitz 1170. The news is worse today as iHeartMedia has decided to get out of the sports radio competition in the market.
Conservative talk can now be heard on 1300 AM. What was once The Buzz has been rebranded as The Patriot.
The Patriot offers all syndicated programming including Glenn Beck, Clay Travis and Buck Sexton, and the Joe Pags Show. Lee Mathews’s show from sister station KTOK in Oklahoma City airs on The Patriot from 5 until 7 pm.
“We are really excited to launch this new format in Tulsa and deliver compelling conservative content to our very active audience,” said iHeartMedia Oklahoma Area President Jon Phillips in a press release. “Having Lee Mathews anchor the 5-7 p.m. slot will be a great addition, as he is closely aligned with everything that happens at the capital in Oklahoma City.”
710 ESPN Seattle Extends Deal With Mariners

The Seattle Mariners have signed a multi-year extension with 710 ESPN Seattle, which is set to begin next season. The team and the station have been in business together for 32 years and that isn’t coming to an end any time soon.

As part of the new deal, the station will launch new programming around the team’s games. Those shows and features will debut with a new season.
