Opportunities are rarely just handed out in sports media, and SportsRadio 94 WIP host Joe DeCamara made sure he wasn’t asking for one in his recently revealed letter to 94 WIP.
Then a recent entrant into the sports media space, DeCamara wrote a letter in 2002 to WIP’s program director Tom Bigby. The host wanted to make sure Bigby knew how hungry he was to work at WIP after fleeing New York City’s financial rat race.
DeCamara even wrote his name three times at the top of the letter to make sure the program director of his hometown station didn’t forget who wrote the letter.
“I have limited experience in sports broadcasting,” DeCamara wrote in the introductory letter. “I do have, however, enough confidence in my abilities to excel within the broadcast industry. While many people (incorrectly) say that they could do what your station’s host do. I say that I will. I know that I will.
“Simply put, I have a fantastic sports mind. However, there is so much more than that. I recognize that I have the creative instincts, intellect, and wit that will elevate me above other people entering this profession, and frankly above most already in it.”
Quite the confidence from DeCamara who noted to Bigby that he started fine-tuning those skills at 1490 WBCB in Levittown, PA.
“I have left my job with ING Barings, a large financial company in New York City, to begin working there [WBCB],” DeCamara said later in the letter. “I am excited to return to my hometown area of Philadelphia and get started at this radio station. I will be very aggressive to position myself for as much short-term and long-term success as possible, but right now, my main objective is to learn, learn, learn.”
Learn he did; DeCamara and his current co-host, Jon Ritchie, paired up for middays on WIP back in Oct. 2016 and have been cruising along ever since. Catch the Joe DeCamara and Jon Ritchie Show weekdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sportsradio 94 WIP.
