Jason Kilar Exits as WarnerMedia CEO Ahead of Merger With Discovery

WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar plans to exit the company this Friday when the AT&T entertainment unit’s merger with Discovery wraps up. In an internal memo to staff, Kilar stated it was the right time for his departure, per TV Newser

“With the pending transaction with Discovery nearing close, now is the right time to share with each of you that I will be departing this amazing company,” Kilar said in a memo sent to WarnerMedia staff.

“There are many feelings one could have in a moment like this, but for me, there are none bigger or more lasting than the feelings of gratitude and love that I have for this team, this company, and this mission.”

Kilar has been in the spotlight recently due to the resignation of CNN president Jeff Zucker. Kilar chose to push out Zucker for failing to reveal a personal relationship with CNN marketing and communications chief Allison Gollust, who subsequently resigned.

During his tenure at WarnerMedia, he also overhauled the company’s structure, reducing approximately 2,000 positions, including some of the most senior roles.

Kilar, who headed the launch of Hulu, moved in to help with the launch of CNN+, which went live last week following the resignation of Zucker. 

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Kilar stated he has “no immediate plans” for his next career move but wants to focus on technology, storytelling, and innovation. “I’m not going to retire and sit on a beach,” Kilar said.

Chris Licht: I Don’t Want CNN to be Vanilla

Changes continue at CNN, but as departures and lineup shuffling to mold the cable news channel into Chris Licht’s vision, the new boss says that the network won’t be more “centrist.”

During an interview with the Financial Times, Licht opened up regarding the changes to come and revealed his strategy for rebranding CNN, as he’s in charge of revitalizing the network and cutting costs.

“One of the biggest misconceptions about my vision is that I want to be vanilla, that I want to be centrist. That is bulls–t,” Licht said.

“You have to be compelling. You have to have edge. In many cases you take a side. Sometimes you just point out uncomfortable questions. But either way you don’t see it through a lens of left or right.”

While Licht is now in charge the same report stated that many who were brought to CNN by Jeff Zucker still have a sense of loyalty to the former president, who exited the network after revealing a consensual relationship with a fellow executive.

“Licht has no superpower, not like Zucker,” an unnamed CNN executive said.

Will Cain: Bob Iger Will Take Stand on ‘Progressive Values’

Over the weekend, it was announced that Bob Iger would be returning to the Walt Disney Company to run once again the media empire, which was a shocking decision to some.

Bob Chapek, who replaced Iger in 2020 as CEO, is stepping down immediately as Iger returns to the position after a two-year absence. Many news media outlets are discussing the change, such as Fox News.

Former ESPN employee and current “Fox & Friends Weekend” co-host Will Cain discussed what the changes mean at the parent company for the sports network he used to do a radio show on and morning television. 

“I think Iger is a strong voice. I think Iger will take a strong stand on whatever it is he believes,” Cain said Monday on “America’s Newsroom.”

“But what he believes is really progressive values. That’s what will drive Disney’s decisions. I believe Iger would have stood up in Florida. He just would have stood up against Ron DeSantis. He will be for the continued woke-ification of Disney.”

Investors are elated by the news of Iger’s return as it sent Disney shares up 9 percent Monday after the stock lost roughly 36 percent of its value this year.

NewsNation Takes Dig at CNN With Billboard

NewsNation wants to compete with CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC in the cable news and it seems as though they are not afraid to strike when one of their competitors deals with several layoffs.

Under new boss Chris Licht, CNN has seen several people exit the network, from executives to those who work in different departments, such as the audio content. 

Nonetheless, it allowed for NewsNation to take a dig at their news rival as the Nexstar Media Group’s cable news network has mounted a billboard near CNN’s Atlanta facility that announces “we’re hiring” (h/t Next TV).

The 15-foot by 70-foot billboard has pictures of NewsNation primetime host Chris Cuomo (who left CNN last year), Ashleigh Banfield (who anchored for CNN and HLN), and Dan Abrams. 

NewsNation, which is based in Chicago, is currently constructing studios in New York and Washington, D.C. The cable news channel plans to hire at least 100 additional staff members in the coming year and air news programming 24 hours a day by 2024.
