Colin Cowherd: Checking Your Ratings Doesn’t Make Them Better

“I think sometimes managers try to outthink the room and try to out-clever the room. The audiences tells you what they like – listen.”

Colin Cowherd has a formula for his success, and he’s not diverting away from it.

In an appearance on the podcast Math and Magic with Bob Pittman, Cowherd talked about a range of topics from his upbringing, to being a business owner and the media industry as a whole.

Cowherd was asked about how some in sports media thrive on constant debate, and he said raucous back and forth has never been his forte.

“I’m not a debate guy. I’ve never watched really a debate show,” he said. “I’m not interested in that format. I don’t want to manufacture opinions to justify our rating. I don’t have a problem with people doing that. It just doesn’t interest me. I don’t find it compelling.”

Colin added that his angle has always been centered on digging into finding answers for major storyline and understanding how games ended the way they did. He’s never been interested in being considered a flamethrower.

“I don’t see myself as that,” he said. “I think I’m self-deprecating, I think my audience knows I’m trying to find interesting angles but there’s certainly room for that in the marketplace. I’m just not that guy.”

When it comes to his broadcast style, whether it be on his FOX Sports Radio show or on his podcast for The Volume, Cowherd has always tried to go above and beyond for the listener.

“I get 9-11 minutes of you in a car. I’m not gonna ramble. I respect you, and I want to earn your respect,” he said. “I want to take you somewhere you haven’t been – on a trip, on a journey through a story. So when it’s over and you get out of your car, it’s almost like a column – lede, meat, wrap it up at the end. And I feel like there’s too much rambling in radio and not enough true storytelling with a beginning, a middle and an end. It closes. Take people somewhere!”

Colin offered some simple advice to other leaders in the advertising and programming space when it comes to figuring out how to connect with an audience.

“Don’t think you’re smarter than the public. If the people like Diet Coke, give them Diet Coke,” he said. “I think sometimes managers try to outthink the room and try to out-clever the room. The audiences tells you what they like – listen.”

Fred Toucher Updates His Vocal Condition

“No one wants to go on the IR, but I realize that radio is a physical game and it’s what you sign up for when you put on those headphones every morning.”

Boston sports radio listeners are not hearing as much from Fred Toucher these days. The morning man on 98.5 The Sports Hub has been dealing with voice issues since the beginning of the year. Anyone that has listened can hear the difference and there are days he has had to bow out of Toucher & Rich entirely.

Toucher missed two days this week. On Friday, his partner Rich Shertenlieb took to the station’s website to tell people what he knows.

“I feel awful for him because he’s truly and believe me when I say this, he is doing everything he can to get his voice back,” Rich wrote. “And if you work in our industry, there’s nothing more infuriating than not having your voice. Now, from everything he’s told us so far, it’s it’s nothing serious medically. It’s just sometimes crap like this can happen. He’s once again getting it looked at.”

He told the audience that he asked Fred Toucher if there is anything specifically he wants the audience to know. Toucher responded with a statement.

“No one wants to go on the IR, but I realize that radio is a physical game and it’s what you sign up for when you put on those headphones every morning,” he wrote. “I’m just pushing through my throat rehab right now, getting a little stronger after each session. I want to thank Coach Radzik for the support.

“Of course, Rich and the boys continue to do tremendous work. My family for all having my back. But most of all, hail zuse (sic) the God of gods. And the reason we have not been eaten alive by the troll people.”

Fred Toucher has not discussed the specifics of his condition on air. Shertenlieb wrote that Toucher has referred to his recent setback as “acid reflux”. There is no timetable for his full-time return.

There are just three more games before the end of the college basketball season, and with it the annual crossover between the CBS NCAA and the TNT NBA studio teams will also conclude.

On Thursday, CBS college basketball analyst Clark Kellogg joined Dukes & Bell on 92.9 The Game in Atlanta live from radio row at the Final Four in Houston, and Kellogg said the busy TV schedule comes with the territory.

“It just happens to be that’s the way it unfolds during this time of year with Warner Bros. Discovery and CBS being partners since 2011 for the tourney,” Kellogg said. “I’m grateful to have a chance to sit where God has graced me to sit and be part of a sporting event that’s as special as we have on the sports calendar.”

The yearly meeting of the basketball personalities always makes for some entertaining studio segments with Kellogg and the TNT NBA studio guys. Co-host Mike Bell told Kellogg he stands out among guys like Kenny Smith and Charles Barkley.

“I always get the impression when I watch that it’s like high school. And you’re in a room, and you’re like the valedictorian of your class and you got the two delinquents with Kenny and Charles,” Bell said.

“I’ve never heard it quite described that way,” Kellogg responded laughing. Clark said it’s all love when everyone is together.

“It’s obvious that we have a great time,” he said. “There’s mutual respect across the board with us on the air.”

“It’s as fun as it appears to be and even more so when we’re not on camera because we’re talking hoops and busting each others chops and having a great time,” Kellogg added.
