A legendary sports media presence in the city of St. Louis has passed away. The St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame announced that Greg Marecek died of multiple organ failure over the weekend.

Marecek began his career as a sportswriter. He went on to join Missouri Sports Radio, which purchased KFNS in 1998. He ran the station until it was sold in 2004.

Five years later, Marecek founded the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame.

“He built it from scratch with the help of some good people like Ron Jacober and Myron Holtzman,” said the Hall of Fame’s Vice President Tim Moore. “That would not have happened “without Greg and his vision.”

Marecek is survived by his wife Helen, three children, and six granddaughters. His son John, who also worked in St. Louis sports radio issued a statement on Twitter.

“His accomplishments in sports and business are too long to list here, but even more important is the love and compassion he had for his family, especially for his six granddaughters. Words can’t express how much he will be missed.”
