There are things that bring us civic pride no matter how they appear to those outside of our bubble. One of the most polarizing of these is food. What may be delicious or instill nostalgia in some may be nausea-inducing to others.
Cincinnati native Dan Patrick took umbrage with comments from SNY’s Gary Cohen on a recent Mets-Reds broadcast chastising the southern Ohio chili scene.
After some banter with the Danettes about how the chili from Skyline and Gold Star works best, Patrick’s feelings on Chicago pizza and hot dogs, and Patrick’s ties to the area, the Dan Patrick Show host delivered an innocuous shot at the perpetually-underachieving Mets.
“Are you this honest about the New York Mets, that’s what I want to know,” Patrick said. “If you’re going to be that honest about Gold Star chili, then I hope you give the unvarnished truth about the New York Mets.”
As anyone can attest, certain foods taste better or worse depending on a variety of external factors. Things such as time of day, beverage pairing, and level of hunger can alter the satisfaction of any meal. Patrick and the crew pointed out that like White Castle hamburgers, Skyline and Gold Star can taste a bit better after a steady stream of libations.
“I would recommend trying it later in the evening and maybe have some beers,” he said. “Not many food groups do you have to say get liquored up before you try it.”
