Social media is an ever-evolving landscape. Anyone who’s been active online in the last 20 years knows that.

Over the last several months, Twitter has innovated in an effort to compete with the likes of audio-specific social media platforms like Clubhouse, by launching Twitter Spaces. And after hearing about the concept of Twitter Spaces, Paul Finebaum has been convinced to give it a try.

Much like Clubhouse and Discord, Twitter Spaces is basically an audio-only chat room. You have a room host who sets the topic and controls who speaks and when.

Twitter’s head of U.S. Sports T.J. Adeshola was on the Paul Finebaum Show on Wednesday and delved a bit more into things, piquing Finebaum’s interest.

Adeshola prefaced the discussion by providing a stat: In 2020 alone there were 3 billion tweets sent about sports. He said the bulk of those tweets were about college football.

“College football fans know what to do when they hop on Twitter,” he said. “We’ve seen the narratives that drive drama and excitement tend to really pop on the timeline.”

With Twitter Spaces, Adeshola said it’s complimentary of the text and wit-heavy discussions that occur on the general Twitter timeline. Finebaum joked that Spaces serves to just step on the toes of sports radio.

“One more entity trying to cut into our talk radio space here, right?” Finebaum said.

Adeshola said if Finebaum invited him down to his place, he’d show him just how Twitter Spaces works. But by the time he explained the concept, Finebaum said he’s going to give it a shot.

“All of us in mainstream media are looking for some alternative possibility,” he said. “I see the future of me late night on Twitter Spaces.”

Be on the lookout for Finebaum on Spaces soon enough.
