It was a tradition for the Yankees’ manager to join the afternoon drive hosts on WFAN. That tradition has apparently come to an end in 2022. Good Karma Brands has announced that Aaron Boone will be making weekly visits with the Michael Kay Show this season on 98.7 ESPN New York.
“With Michael Kay as the voice of New York Yankees television broadcasts, the dynamic duo of Boone and Kay will provide fans with an inside look into the Yankees season,” Market Manager Vinny DiMarco said in a release. “The live interview will be a sports talk radio exclusive for fans and partners to tune into each week.”
Boone will join the show each Thursday during the season. The press release did not specify a time for the appearance other than to say it will happen in the 4pm ET hour.
With Boone joining 98.7 for the 2022 MLB season, afternoon host Craig Carton took to Twitter to explain why the manager’s spot would not happen on WFAN. He said the station made a decision not to pursue the interview with Boone this season. Carton said he and Evan Roberts will instead focus on segments more in-line with their more irreverent show which have been a hit with their listeners.
Whatever the truth is regarding why Boone is making his weekly appearance on 98.7 instead of WFAN is irrelevant. The fact is this is the end of WFAN’s regular visit with the sitting Yankees manager. Each of the last three men in that position, Joe Torre, Joe Girardi, and Aaron Boone, each made regular appearances on the station. Michael Kay, Don La Greca and Peter Rosenberg now get a chance to try and turn those weekly hits with Boone into regular appointments with New York sports radio listeners.
