Jon Sciambi: Calling Baseball on Radio Like Conducting an Orchestra

“For radio, there is trying to deliver images in people’s heads.”

As the World Series continues, Jon Sciambi, affectionately known as “Boog,” is in the midst of his first year as the national radio voice of the Fall Classic.

Sciambi, the television voice of the Chicago Cubs on Marquee Sports Network, succeeds Dan Shulman in the role and highly regards the responsibility of delivering the action to baseball fans. He is on the call with analysts Jessica Mendoza and Eduardo Pérez, along with insider Buster Olney. Sciambi is staying focused on the nuances of the job and making sure he adequately performs his role.

“People cannot watch the game, so as the saying goes, it’s painting the picture,” he said in an interview with Richard Deitsch of The Athletic. “There’s a craft to it, and it’s something that I really take seriously and something that I love.”

There are innate differences between calling contests on radio as opposed to performing play-by-play duties on television. Jon Sciambi has balanced both throughout the season as the regional voice of the Cubs and national radio voice for most Sunday Night Baseball contests.

“For radio, there is trying to deliver images in people’s heads,” Sciambi said. “You want to try to, as efficiently as possible, describe what you’re seeing. You want to use the sounds of the ballpark. When you do it well, you feel like you’re conducting an orchestra.

“Whereas on television, you have different choices that you can make, but the viewer can always see it. So if you want to say, ‘Here’s the 2-1,’ you can, but the score bug shows you that it’s the 2-1, and you see the pitcher pitching. On radio, they don’t know that the play is starting until you say, ‘Montgomery kicks and deals.’”

In collaboration with 670 The Score, Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C), and American Airlines, the Chicago Cubs will be hosting “Cubs for a Cure.” This initiative aims to raise funds for cancer research through various events such as a radiothon, an auction of game-used gear, and a special Cubs Charities 50/50 Raffle with a guaranteed jackpot. The culmination of this effort will be during the Cubs’ game against the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday, August 17th.

“Cubs for a Cure is the evolution of an event we held last year in honor of Lin Brehmer who passed away from cancer,” said Cubs President of Business Operations Crane Kenney in a release. “Unfortunately, Lin’s story is all too common. We all know someone who has been impacted by cancer, so together with our friends at Audacy, Stand Up To Cancer and American Airlines, the Cubs are committed to doing our part. We hope fans join us for Cubs for a Cure and help raise funds to fight this devastating disease.”

Prior to the event, 670 The Score will host a 24-hour radiothon from 10 a.m. CT Thursday, August 15, through 10 a.m. CT Friday, August 16, where listeners can donate to the cause with 100% of the proceeds benefiting cancer research. Cubs players and other VIP guests will take part in the radiothon.

“It’s an honor to host a 24-hour radiothon in partnership with the Cubs,” said 670 The Score host Danny Parkins. “Fundraising for cancer research is a passion of mine as a tribute to my brother Brad who passed away from brain cancer. I look forward to raising money in his honor and for everyone who faces this terrible disease.”

“The goal is to raise as much money as possible for research and to find a cure,” said 670 The Score Vice President of Programming Mitch Rosen. “To partner with an iconic organization like the Cubs, in conjunction with the power of The Score’s audience, should make Cubs for a Cure a great success.”

David Haugh: ‘I Am More Surprised’ Green Bay Would Let Doug Gottlieb Do Both Jobs

“Could he replace a certain someone at St. John’s and then maybe get on the FAN in New York, is that his master plan?

During the ‘Extra Point’ segment on 670 The Score’s Mully & Haugh show, hosts Mike Mulligan and David Haugh weighed in on the news that the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay hired FOX Sports Radio host Doug Gottlieb as its new head basketball coach. That in itself would be pretty big news, however, it is that Gottlieb plans to still do his daily radio show which is making more of the headlines.

“Look this is unprecedented with Doug Gottlieb,” said Haugh. “I’m fascinated to see how it goes, it’s a lot to take on. I am more surprised, not that he would try it, but that Green Bay would let him do this. You are allowing him to have divided attention and you know that his commitment is 90% to the basketball program. He’s got to give 10% to the radio show, it’s a two-hour national radio show. Even though that doesn’t sound like a lot to some people, it is.

“If you are going to be prepared and not sound like a fool you are going to have to prepare and spend some time. He is good at that and his basketball credentials, I think, speak for themselves. He is an easy target for criticism because he is outspoken, he does say some polarizing things…I don’t know if this is going to work, it’s going to be a lot of fun to watch and to listen to, to see how he balances both things and I do wonder, will it lead to someone else trying this? This is a great platform for Green Bay basketball, and I don’t know if they could ever say that before.”

Mike Mulligan added, “I wonder about Doug Gottlieb as a head coach…I think the tricky part here is keeping his day job with FOX…You better be following your sports and doing your work and putting in all the effort required to get that done. I look at it and wonder how successful he is going to be…It’s a launching pad type job there…Could he replace a certain someone at St. Johns and then maybe get on the FAN in New York, is that his master plan?…The problem is that it is very difficult to do two full time jobs and do them well…it’s very hard to be a guy that’s working at one career, even if it overlaps, and then working at another one…He is going to need a lot of help.”

In making the official announcement at the top of his radio show yesterday, Gottlieb said, “I told my kids this: This is the response to people who want to laugh at it. If no one is laughing at your dreams, you might not be dreaming big enough. So, I am honored, I am motivated, and I am ready, and I am the new head coach at Wisconsin-Green Bay and I ain’t going anywhere with this radio show.”

Two sports radio veterans are teaming up for a new YouTube Show. Zach Krantz, who has been with WQAM since 2007 as an Executive Producer and host and now is a Digital Content Producer and Ken LaVicka, who recently ended his 17-year run on the air at ESPN 106.3 in West Palm are starting a show called By All Accounts.

The show will be a podcast and also available on YouTube and is set to begin on Monday May 20.

The new show X account posted a video announcement which said, “Be careful what you wish for. You guessed it. Another damn YouTube show/podcast. We scroll so you don’t have to. Sports. Social Media. Stupidity. Debuts Monday.”

Just over a month ago LaVicka’s show, LaVicka, Theo & Stone, came to an end as Good Karma Brands decided to restructure the station’s programming and while the show was over, LaVicka said he was not let go, rather Good Karma was going to help him find his next opportunity.

On his final show, he said, “…I will be exiting the station, but instead of being given a pink slip or being booted out the door, which is what always happens in this radio industry GKB, the parent company of ESPN West Palm is going to help me to my next opportunity. This for me is bittersweet because this is all I’ve really known professionally…I’ve spent 17 years here at ESPN 106.3 and today’s it, I’m done.”
